KCFAA Virtual Gala

KCFAA’s annual gala goes virtual! Join us as we celebrate the centennial year of legendary jazz saxophonist, composer and Kansas City’s own, Charlie Parker during the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey Annual Benefit Gala. This celebration promises to be an unforgettable evening as Charlie Parker is honored with a newly commissioned dance work, A Jam Session for Troubling Times. The Gala will feature presentations and performances from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, AileyCamp the Group, and our Gala honoree Bobby Watson. Race, Place & Diversity Awards

The Race, Place & Diversity (RPD) Award was created to honor an individual and/or local organization whose actions demonstrate a commitment to advance diversity and equity. This year’s honoree is Bryan Stevenson, famed attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. KCFAA will present our 2021 Award at the Partnership for Justice & Remembrance online lecture on April 27, 2021. After receiving the RPD Award, Mr. Stevenson will speak live for 45 minutes followed by a Q & A session. The event is co-hosted by KCFAA, the UMKC Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair, and The Community Remembrance Project-MO.

Courageous Conversations: Racism & Local Government

During this 90 minute program, we will have an engaging discussion about local government efforts to face issues related to race and racism. We will feature elected leaders from various municipalities from the greater metropolitan area. This panel will share thoughts about how city and county leaders are working to address inequities that marginalize people of color and changes they are making to improve equity and fairness in their communities.
This conversation will be moderated by David Warm of MARC and will be broadcast via Zoom. The panelists include: William Baird (Mayor of Lee’s Summit), Harold Johnson (County Commissioner KCK and Wyandotte County), Mike McDonough (Mayor of Raytown), and Carson Ross (Mayor of Blue Springs).

KCFAA is proud to be a part of The American Jazz Museum’s Tribute Concert honoring Ella Fitzgerald, The Queen of Swing.The variety concert will broadcast live from the Gem Theater in the 18th & Vine District, featuring dance by Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, music, and poetry, this virtual, no audience show will be featured on the American Jazz Museum’s Facebook page.
